I actually got 4 decks of cards and dealt myself a spider solitaire game JUST TO SEE how many times each and every deal contain 5 of the same cards, Kings or aces on the bottom of each pile. This game is stupid but addictive. On my deathbed I will want the "spider solitaire" years back.

@John
The problem with that philosophy is that the same thing could be said in chess games where Player X can mate in so many moves, and there's nothing Player Y can do to stop it. But they have to play through to the end, just in case one of them messes up.

Actually, once you have removed ALL the hidden cards from the top row, all the games are winnable. So, Spider should just declare you a winner and be done with it.

For reference, aisleriot has a bug about this: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=407329

And someone sent in a patch that changes "all empty spaces must be filled" to "as many spaces as possible must be filled": http://bugzilla.gnome.org/attachment.cgi?id=124182&action=view

But the patch isn't in because some purist thinks it's a bad idea to change the Spider rules: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=407329#c6
